PROJECT DETAIL
Moai are monolithic human figures on the Polynesian island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) between 1250 and 1500 AD. Moai are carved in relatively flat planes, the faces bearing proud but enigmatic expressions. Excellent subject for a LEGO sculpture.
I built two Moai, one carved from rock, the other from wood. Both LEGO statues have an enigmatic expression - staring into infinity - reflecting upon life and death.
The reddish brown statue ( 49 layers / 47cm tall - slightly assymmetrical) is built facing the most common orientation, parallel to its 16x16 baseplate. The dark bluish gray version ( 81 layers / 78cm tall - perfectly symmetrical) on the other hand was crafted at a 45 degree angle, accentuating the long slender nose.
